The mission of Yokoyama Direct Method (YDM) is to promote global exchange and cross-cultural understanding through language education accessible to anyone, and integrate language, culture and technology into a comprehensive educational system that is not confined to any specific nationality.
YDM allows learning a new language in a shorter time and with a higher efficiency.
YDM, The Yokoyama Direct method, based on Founder Nobuko Yokoyama’s over thirteen years of experience and research in language education, is a method of teaching foreign language by specially trained native instructors. YDM is an integrated system of language education, which allows quick and effective acquisition of command of foreign languages as well as an overall understanding of the culture and customs associated with the languages.
YDM is readily adapted to different languages because of its theory based, specially developed textbooks and supplemental materials, and has seen success in its application to English and Chinese. With YDM, anyone over the age of six an learn foreign languages effectively and without difficulty regardless of gender or experience. YDM requires no special language ability on the instructor’s part because his/her own first language is the only language necessary to teach and manage students whose first language may vary.
The core of the lesson is sentence-pattern practice in the dialogue format that emphasizes look, listen and respond. Each lesson is programmed so that the basic sentence patterns and grammar can be systematically mastered through natural conversation practice.
Each lesson progresses through presentation, practice and review, so both the instructor and the students can check their understanding and mastery of the material at any time.
Textbooks feature many illustrations to highlight target sentence patterns and vocabulary. Cultural topics and customs are embedded in the conversations and everyday situations depicted by the textbook characters to foster understanding of the country (or countries) in which the target language is spoken.
Illustrations and sentences are systematically laid out so that affirmative sentences , negative sentences, new vocabulary, and etc. are easily recognized.
YDM is a teaching method that teaches the target language directly in the target language (Japanese if Japanese), "Yokoyama Direct Method" ( Yokoyama ), which was developed based on the practice and research of language education over 10 years by Nobuko Yokoyama. Direct Method ).
YDM is a language education system built so that language learners can acquire conversation skills more effectively in a shorter period of time and understand culture and customs.
YDM can be applied not only to Japanese but also to other language education with texts and supplementary teaching materials developed according to the theory, and has achieved results in English and Chinese so far.
With YDM , anyone can learn a foreign language efficiently and comfortably from the age of about 6 years old, regardless of gender or experience.
With YDM , even if there are multiple learners with different first languages, if the target language is Japanese, you can teach at the same time using only Japanese.
The lessons focus on interactive sentence pattern practice, where you see, hear, and answer.
The basic sentence patterns and grammar are programmed so that you can systematically acquire them from natural conversation practice.
Each lesson follows the steps of "Introduction" ( Presentation ), "Fixation" ( Practice ), and "Review" ( Review ), so teachers and learners can accurately judge the level of understanding and mastery at any time.
Illustrations are drawn everywhere in the text to visually and clearly show the sentence pattern and vocabulary of the learning goal.
